The results are in! Leading Wine Critic James Halliday RATES Sandalford in the 2023 Wine Companion

Australia's leading wine critic James Halliday has once again awarded Sandalford Wines the very coveted and extremely prestigious RED 5 STAR rating in his 2023 Australian Wine Companion just released.

We are delighted to be awarded GOLD and SILVER 8 times over, in this best selling wine guide.

To have our premium wines recognised with ratings from 90-95 feels fantastic!

And, we love the descriptions on our two Western Australian originating vineyards; ‘the warmth of the sunshine over the Swan Valley on show’ and ‘the immaculate (Margaret River) 2020 vintage conditions have imbued a ripeness and accessibility that makes for ideal drinking’.

Thank you to the writers and publishers of Australia’s wine bible!

And congratulations to our Winemaking and Viticultural teams lead by Ross Pamment and Ben Maher respectively for this fantastic achievement!!

James said about Sandalford Wines in his annual 'wine bible':

"Sandalford is one of Australia’s oldest and largest privately owned wineries. In 1970 it moved beyond its original Swan Valley base, purchasing a substantial property in Margaret River that is now the main source of its premium grapes. Wines are released under the 1840 (Swan Valley), Element, Winemakers, Margaret River and Estate Reserve ranges, with Prendiville Reserve at the top. Exports to all major markets." - JAMES HALLIDAY

Book cover

Sandalford 1840 Range 2019 Shiraz
It's satisfying to see producers proudly proclaiming the Swan Valley on the front label. As Australia's 2nd-oldest wine region, the history there spans two centuries. Shiraz is one of the key red varieties grown (along with grenache) and this 1840 does Swan Valley shiraz justice. Concentrated, shapely, lush and long, this is a brilliant and opulent iteration of shiraz, the warmth of the sunshine over the Swan on show. All things tucked away and in place (oak, tannins and acid). Screw Cap. 14.5% alc.
Rating 95 GOLD.  Drink 2021-2031.  RRP $50.

2020 Sandalford Prendiville Reserve Chardonnay
Concentrated, intense and long. What this wine lacks in complexity, it gains in power. It is raw and dense, with layer upon layer of orchard fruit, laced together with taut briny acidity. Very smart. Screw Cap. 13.5% alc.
Rating 94 SILVER.  Drink 2022-2029.  RRP $80.

2019 Sandalford Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
With 5/3% malbec/merlot. Fruit from the Wilyabrup vineyard, planted in the early 1970s. Matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new). Aromatically reticent at this early stage, however in the mouth there is hung deli meat, red berry fruits and a fortification of toasty, resinous oak. All things in place, and built for the long haul. Screw Cap. 14.5% alc.
Rating 94 SILVER.  Drink 2021-2036.  RRP $50.

2019 Sandalford Prendiville Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Matured for 18 months in French oak (75% new). The cool 2019 vintage in Margaret River was responsible for wines of high aromatics, delicate flavour profiles and more immediate drinking. While this wine has the hallmarks required for ageing (firm structure, balanced acid and ripe fruit) it also displays a tendency towards being open, approachable and quite succulent. Due to the high proportion of new oak, the fruit comes in at the middle palate, and speaks of cassis, raspberry, blackberry and red apples, backed by licorice, clove and aniseed. Smart. Screw Cap. 14.5% alc.
Rating 93 SILVER.  Drink 2023-2033.  RRP $130.

Sandalford 1840 Range 2019 Cabernet Merlot
Fennel seeds, licorice and star anise. The top notes of this wine are spicy and exotic; the baritone of fruit from the Valley shows muscle, drive and strength. The fruit is sweet and begs for a decant, to help unleash it from the tannic structure that currently holds it. This will blossom in time. Screw Cap. 14% alc.
Rating 92 SILVER.  Drink 2021-2031.  RRP $50.

2019 Sandalford Estate Reserve Shiraz
Matured for 14 months in French oak (30% new). The fruit is plump and very ripe, like a blanket on the tongue, and the oak creates firmness in the tannins. There is warmth through the back palate, however the fruit contributes such a licorice character that the warmth can be overlooked. Blackberry, mulberry and a couple of raspberries lead the charge. Screw Cap. 15% alc.
Rating 91 Silver Drink 2021-2027 RRP $40

2020 Sandalford Margaret River Range Cabernet Merlot
65/35% cabernet sauvignon/merlot. Plums, cassis, blackberry and mulberry form the core of this wine. The immaculate 2020 vintage conditions have imbued it with a ripeness and accessibility that makes for ideal drinking at $22. Value+. Screw Cap. 14% alc.
Rating 90 SILVER.  Drink 2021-2028.  RRP $25.

2020 Sandalford Estate Reserve Chardonnay
Rich, ripe and intense – this has a satisfying baritone reserve of orchard fruit flavour, powered by citrus acidity and framed by toasty oak. Quite golden in the glass for such a young wine, but it does fit with the rest of the flavour observations. Big, muscly chardonnay. Screw Cap. 13% alc.
Rating 90 SILVER.  Drink 2021-2027.  RRP $38.
