Dear Concert patron at tonight's performance by Michael Buble,
One of the many terrific aspects of Sandalford's Winery Concert venues in both the Swan Valley and Margaret River is that their size allows the world's leading recording acts to visit Western Australia and deliver truly spectacular outdoor shows in the most incredible natural locations.
Whether it's Sting, Simply Red, Spandau Ballet, Tears for Fears, Robin Gibb, Bonnie Tyler, Crowded House, Leonard Cohen, Lionel Richie, Tom Jones, Carole King, Ronan Keating, John Fogarty, John Mellencamp, The Motown Legends, Alicia Keys, Carlos Santana, Sheryl Crowe or Jordan Sparks, Sandalford Estate Swan Valley and Margaret River are now clearly established stopping points for the true musical megastar.
So it was no surprise then the Canadian crooner Michael Buble, who in the last few years has clearly established himself as one of the planet's leading recording artists and sits firmly at the top table of the abovementioned company of artists, travelled West to perform at Sandalford Estate.
With 25 million albums sold, a couple of Grammys (including the latest only a week or two back) and sold-out gigs across the globe, the former cruise ship singer has been transformed into a bona fide musical icon of a truly world's best standing.
Most of the gleefully expectant crowd at Sandalford Estate tonight were in their seats by the time vocal band Naturally 7 took to the stage to open the show.
The sort of band that the X-Factor is crying out for, the Americans raced through an undeniably entertaining set with an uplifting climax that was part American evangelism, part aerobics workout. As a wise man once probably said, "If God had wanted mankind to sing a capella, he wouldn't have invented instruments."
Naturally 7 is like no other a Capella group making music today. The seven group members not only sing, but also play their own musical instruments. To be more specific, the members of Naturally 7 play their own instruments by using their vocals to create the sound of instruments — drums, a harmonica, a bass and even an electric guitar.
Though the originality of Naturally 7's style was an absolute crowd pleaser, their popularity couldn't compare to that of the man of the hour, Mr. Michael Bublé.
On his website, Buble says: "One of the great challenges of a song stylist is to take highly familiar songs… already recorded by hundreds of artists and ask myself, can I bring something special to this song?"
As the lights went down and the 13 piece big band burst into a stunningly James Bond-esque "Cry Me A River" that was all nocturnal mood, screaming horns and thumping drums, it seemed as if the Canadian had risen to that challenge. Complete with dramatic instrumentation and a fantastic pyrotechnic climax, it was one heck of a way to announce yourself to the crowd. It was the most imaginative reading of a song that lost its meaning decades ago. It's already a Bublé career signpost.
Bublé attracted a diverse demographic of people to his concert at Sandalford Estate — mainly women of all ages, along with the occasional male dragged to the concert by his girlfriend or wife.
The 36-year-old singer is however certainly at the apex of his popularity, and his fans - particularly the female ones - are blindly adoring.
The term 'consummate professional' often implies a certain lack of sincerity, but Buble has charisma and personality by the bucketload. Likeable, charming and funny, the crooner did a super job of sprinkling enough local references through the show that it felt like less of a giant tour machine and exactly like a personal experience.

Bublé is not so much an interpreter of famous songs. He sings them too close to the originals to truly make them his own. A couple of examples were Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" and Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind."
Both songs were selections were from his recent album, "Crazy Love." He played to the female crowd, young, or, rather, youngsters, and older, which is to say, the mums in the audience. Both age groups loved it.
But the audience seemed most excitable with his self-penned hits. "Everything" was one of them, ending with an arena full of "la's" as his fans sang the fade-out. Another hit: "Haven't Met You Yet." The stylistic line seems to blur here. Is Bublé a jazz singer, performing standards, or is he a pop-music singer? Both.
|
|
Michael Bublé showcased a flawless ability to shift from one song to the next. Whether it was a lead in of the Black Eyed Peas' "I've Got a Feeling," his newest single "Hollywood," or classics such as "For Once in My Life," Bublé's vocals never wavered. The diverse singer acknowledged his similarity to Sinatra, but insisted it was Michael Jackson that inspired him as he was honing his abilities.
As the evening came to a close, Bublé ended with the biggest hit of his career to date, the radio smash, "Haven't Met You Yet" and then treated the expectant audience to the classic "Feeling Good," and Continuing with a sing along of "Me and Mrs. Jones"
|
And as the curtain closed on the night, Michael Bublé stood alone on the stage, allowing just his strong voice to carry the last few verses of the song out to the hushed crowd. While no one would argue Bublé is a talented singer, one has to see him to fully believe just how talented he truly is. It is entirely fitting to say that every one of us who witnessed this performance at Sandalford Estate tonight all left totally star struck by what we'd seen and experienced. It doesn't get much better!! In fact it doesn't get any better at all.

PLEASE COME BACK NEXT WEEK FOR ANOTHER TRULY WORLD CLASS CONCERT!!!!!

LEGENDARY PERFORMER CARLOS SANTANA
SUPPORTED BY JOHN BUTLER!!!
Toting a style that defies definition, immediately recognizable yet unlike any other, Santana fusion of Latin rock, blues, soul and jazz coming in full swing on stage in a way that transcends time and the limits of genre typecasting.
For forty years and as many albums later, Santana has sold more than 90 million records and reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide.
To date, Santana has won ten Grammy Awards, including a record-tying nine for a single project, 1999's Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for Smooth). In 1998, the group was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, whose web page on their induction notes, "Guitarist Carlos Santana is one of rocks true virtuosos and guiding lights."
Among many other honours, Carlos Santana has also been cited by Rolling Stone as #15 on their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." His newest CD, GUITAR HEAVEN... THE GREATEST GUITAR CLASSICS OF ALL TIMES (ARISTA) (featuring While My Guitar Gently Weeps), was released in late September 2010. Celebrating this chart debut, Santana joins the ranks of the Rolling Stones as the only musical act in chart history to score at least one Top 10 album in every decade beginning with the 1960s. GUITAR HEAVEN... is Santana's 29th Billboard Top 200 charting release, 12th Top 10 album debut and third Top 10 debut in the past 5 years.
Since its #5 debut on the Australian charts GUITAR HEAVEN has achieved gold status. It was produced by Howard Benson, Matt Serletic, Clive Davis and Carlos Santana who devised a list of guitar-centric titles - and then invited a who's who of guest vocalists to perform on every track. Singers range from Chris Cornell (on Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love), India.Arie and Yo Yo Ma (on the album's first single While My Guitar Gently Weeps), Pat Monahan (on Van Halen's Dance the Night Away), Chester Bennington and Ray Manzarek (on The Doors' Riders on the Storm), Rob Thomas (on Cream's Sunshine Of Your Love), Scott Weiland (on the Rolling Stones' Can't You Hear Me Knockin'), Chris Daughtry (on the album's current single Def Leppard's Photograph), Gavin Rossdale (on T. Rex's Bang A Gong), rapper Nas (on AC/DC's Back In Black), veteran Joe Cocker (on Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing), and more.
There are few artists of this caliber, and fewer opportunities to see them live. Do not miss the chance to see one of the most enduring guitar legends at Sandalford Estate, Swan Valley on March 13, 2011.
