February 2010
Hi Wine Club Members,
It is harvest time for us here at Sandalford so I thought I’d give you a little insight into what goes on when it is time for us to pick grapes!
It was a windy afternoon in Margaret River on Monday the 15th February which saw in the beginning of our 2010 harvest. Two harvesters, 4 tractors, 6 Sandalford staff and numerous contractors were all ready for the 7pm start to pick grapes to go into our upcoming 2010 Margaret River Unoaked Chardonnay. A beautifully cool evening gave us perfect conditions for picking. Most people are actually unaware that the reason for picking in the evening is to ensure the coolest temperature possible. This means there is less chance of drawing out the harsh and bitter components from the grapes and less chance of spoilage before it arrives at the winery. The trip by truck to Perth takes approximately 4 hours so the fruit is transported in the early hours of the morning, ready at Sandalford’s wine making facility in the Swan Valley for processing first thing.
Harvesters work by straddling the vines to shake the berries right off the stalks. The fruit is then carried by a conveyer to the top of the machine, leaves are blown away and the fruit is dropped into wine bins being pulled along by a tractor, one row of vines away.

The amount of fruit that comes off each vine is never certain as there are so many factors that contribute to the total. Older vines produce less fruit but this fruit is very full flavoured whilst outer vines can be more exposed to the elements which can lead to less fruit.
Our red wine grapes will be harvested in the coming weeks.

Rob Thomas Day On the Green review
 |
He had just finished a solo version of Remembered Well, a touching b-side she had requested.
Standing there with an ill-fitting Akubra jammed on his sweat-drenched head at this moment the
38-year-old looked every inch a desperate performer who’d do anything within his power – including
impersonating a lost tourist who’d somehow found himself in front of 10,000 people - to make
sure his audience is having a great time. It didn’t stop at requests.
It was a night where much went wrong but sheer professionalism actually made triumph
from adversity. Earlier the lighting rig had shut down just as Thomas and his seven-piece
band finished Streetcorner Symphony. A single spotlight quickly located the fair-haired singer
in the darkness and after teasing his lighting designer he said that the staging misfire didn’t
matter because they hadn’t come to put on a light show, they’d come to play music...
