Greetings,

The end of March and beginning of April this year coincides with the conclusion of Sandalford’s Annual Concert Series and the last grape harvest of Vintage 2011.

In the last month or so, the entire Sandalford team has either been involved with, or otherwise witnessed, a frenetic and extremely diverse amount of activity at both of our properties.

March was actually one of our busiest ever months not the least reason being due to the Carlos Santana/John Butler gig as well as the three sold out Michael Buble shows, including the inaugural concert at Margaret River on Sunday March 6, 2011. Nearly 50,000 guests attended those four concerts over back to back weekends at Sandalford and experienced truly world class musical talent in the beautiful setting of our two vineyards.

Sandalford Estate

My Margaret River based team as well as many locals, are still absolutely 'buzzing' after Michael Buble's performance at Sandalford Estate, Margaret River and all of us are now very excited with the news that the Labour Day long weekend in March is set to become an annual calender concert event. I understand that Mr Dainty, Zaccaria and Brinklow are close to finalising arrangements for next years masthead Margaret River concert, but for now we, just like you, have to wait (very excitedly but somewhat impatiently) for the official announcement which I understand is only a month or two away.  That being so we sincerely thank all of you who have already pre-registered for tickets for this show – at the time of writing we had received expressions of interest for nearly 6,000 tickets which is absolutely phenomenal considering the act hasn’t even been announced – this event is bound to sell out extremely quickly when it does go on sale in the next month or two).

Of course the announcement last week that k.d. lang is going to perform in the Swan Valley on Saturday November 5, 2011 is also very, very exciting and our Events team have told me that Wineclub members have already snaffled up’ in near record time almost the entire allocation put aside exclusively for them ahead of the general public on sale on April 18.  If you want to purchase the remaining tickets in our allocation please act quickly.

In my column in the last newsletter, Vintage 2011 had only just begun but less than a month or two later its all over (read what our Chief Winemaker Paul Boulden said about V2011 below). Compared to last year picking ended 10 to 14 days earlier due primarily to the sustained sunny weather in January and February, without cool nights. By all accounts the quality is excellent, equal to the 2007 vintage which was a stunner. Apparently it was an absolutely spectacular year in particular for chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.

As is customary each month I have put together some absolutely super value wine specials which are available through to the end of April exclusively to Sandalford Wineclub members. Whilst you can order these via the links below to our website, many of you will have either already received or will otherwise shortly a telephone call from myself or one of our team offering you the opportunity over the phone to order these and some other spectacular specials available exclusively to yourselves.

On a final note please don't forget that Mothers Day occurs on the first Sunday in May. In preparation for this our Executive Chef Phil Thomas and his team are developing a special menu for lunch service at Sandalford Estate Swan Valley on that day, and those attending can expect an absolutely wonderful experience when dining with their mums. Remember to book early though because its sure to be a sellout!!

Until next month best wishes and have a fantastic April!!

Vintage 2011 Message from Sandalford Chief Winemaker Paul Boulden

We have just completed vintage 2011. Whilst it started earlier than usual it finished very much on time. The whites all came in together but the reds just eased in as they should with the usual norm of Shiraz coming off the vineyard in Margaret River before the Cabernet Sauvignon.

The quality of the fruit this year was absolutely outstanding and certainly contrasts once again with our cousins in the eastern states who have been blighted with very cool, wet and in line with this, disease-ridden fruit. In more recent years past by contrast they have had searing heat.

Margaret River whilst warm and dry certainly much more moderate and consistently even this year for growing premium grapes much more so than the very cool 2006 vintage.

The whites this year given the above will be more forward in style. Riper flavours with slightly higher alcohols than usual. Most will edge in to what we call the tropical spectrum of fruit flavour as opposed to the greener, more herbal spectrum.

The reds are just stunning with rich, ripe flavours, great colour and velvet-like tannins. We have added no acid to any of our wines this year and again this shows the strength of our 40 yr old Margaret River Estate vines combined with what many now regard as Australia's greatest winemaking region, Margaret River.

In the next two months we will commence the annual bottling program meaning you are likely to see the first wines from V2011 available for sale by late May.

I will be balancing my time in the next month or so working through our final wine blends before travelling across to Australia's East Coast to work with our National Distribution Partner (Fine Wine Partners) spending time with our customers from Cairns in the North to Hobart in the South.

Until next time, best wishes

Paul Boulden

Once a year GG and I head down Benara Road, turn right down West Swan Road and drive down the long, scenic driveway to the cellar door of Sandalford Winery. I look forward to it every year and Sunday gone was our third visit. Always hard when you go to back to a place, will it impress us like it did last year?

The weather was completely perfect – blue skies, the right amount of sunshine and heading down the driveway the vines all looked amazing. I was so happy to be there again!

Guess where I have landed today? In Western Australia! Yep, that's right – in Perth to be specific, after a five hour flight across the country. It's no coincidence that our first stop once we land is a winery – wine is very popular here in Western Australia. Having arrived around lunchtime we enter Sandalford winery which is one of Perth's most visited wineries and the oldest family owned wineries. Here, 10 times a year, they merge wine, food and music and hold outdoor concerts. Why only days ago Sting had just finished playing. Other acts include Alicia Keys, Tom Jones, Diana Krall, and Michael Buble.

Dainty Consolidated Entertainment, Zaccaria Events and Sandalford Wines announced last week that k.d. lang will come to Perth on November 5th 2011 as part of her tour of Australia.

The concert tour will see k.d. perform a show with her new band the Siss Boom Bang at Sandalford Estate, Swan Valley.

Prior to the concert tour, k.d. will be in Australia in early April, to promote her brand new studio album Sing it Loud which will be released by Warner/Nonesuch on April 1.

Produced by lang and Joe Pisapia, it is the award-winning singer-songwriter’s first record made entirely with a band of her own since the pair of albums with the Reclines that launched her groundbreaking career over 20 years ago.  This collection of songs reflects the organic, collaborative nature of the sessions, which took place at Pisapia’s Middletree Studios in Nashville. Many of the songs were recorded live in the studio and that energy is palpable. http://kdlang.com/  contains full details of the new album, as well as a Free download of a song from it.

Sing it Loud is lang’s first studio album since 2008’s Watershed, which saw Australia deliver k.d her first ever #1 album.  Watershed also debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 and received gold certification by ARIA. In early 2010, she marked the 25th anniversary of her recording debut with Recollection, a career retrospective which went to #1 for three weeks and which has received platinum certification by ARIA.  Later that year k.d. performed Hallelujah, the Leonard Cohen classic, to a standing ovation at the 2010 Logie Awards which saw the album surge back into the # 1 position.

In February this year, lang’sHallelujah Vancouver Winter 2010” was nominated for a Juno Award for Single of the Year. The track is her interpretation of the Leonard Cohen classic and was recorded live at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics. To date, lang has won four GRAMMY® awards, eight Juno Awards, a BRIT, an AMA, a VMA, and four awards from GLAAD. In 1996, she received Canada’s highest civilian honor, the Order of Canada. She has appeared alongside such musical luminaries as Roy Orbison, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Loretta Lynn, and Tony Bennett. “She’s the best singer of her generation,” observed Bennett, who has frequently toured with lang since their 2002 Wonderful World duets album. lang has also contributed to numerous soundtracks, and has appeared in films.

She is renowned for her live shows, prompting the New York Times’ Stephen Holden to observe: “Few singers command such perfection of pitch. Her voice, at once beautiful and unadorned and softened with a veil of smoke, invariably hits the middle of a note and remains there.”

After the hugely successful inaugural concert at Sandalford Estate Margaret River last month, where pop superstar Michael Buble performed his heart out to a capacity audience of 11,000 adoring fans, it has now been officially confirmed that an annual major music concert will be held at this fantastic new venue during each March Labour Day long weekend.

Australia's premier concert promoter Paul Dainty, in Perth recently for the Neil Diamond tour, has now confirmed that the new venue will play host to another major act on March 3rd or 4th in 2012. "We obviously can't say who the artist is yet, but the date is carved in stone and I can assure you it will be amazing" Dainty says. "The new Sandalford Estate in Margaret River is unquestionably one of the best outdoor concert venues in the world. Save the date in your calendar, and stand by for a major announcement soon".

Dainty who is responsible for bringing acts like the Rolling Stones, George Michael, Britney Spears and Michael Buble will be promoting the annual Sandalford Estate Margaret River event and is promising to deliver a concert experience that is second to none.

Sandalford CEO Grant Brinklow echoed Dainty's comments adding, "It makes total sense to have an annual concert during the Labour Day long weekend. People can take their time, enjoy the whole weekend in the region and what better way to spend an evening than to experience a world class artist live in concert".

Perth based promoter John Zaccaria said the inaugural concert was not without its challenges, given the massive infrastructure, staging and production required, but added "The end result is worth it. This venue is major coup for the WA public and for the artists that will play here."

The new concert venue, owned by the Prendiville family, is the sister property to the Sandalford Estate Swan Valley which has staged numerous concerts over the years, and is nestled in amongst bushland in the Wilyabrup sub region of Margaret River, spectacularly overlooking a lake and one of the most famed wine growing areas of Australia.

Wine Communicators of Australia brings SOCIAL MEDIA GURU TO PERTH

The President and Committee of Wine Communicators of Australia extend an invitation to you to attend our 2011 Annual Lecture, which will be held in Perth this year for the first time. Wine Communicators of Australia (WCA) is thrilled to announce the impending visit of internationally renowned social media guru Rick Bakas of Bakas Media on a two-week tour of lectures and social media events across the country.

Rick will present one Perth lecture on 8th April 2011, addressing trends and case studies of social media and wine with the topic:

Not in new media in 2011? Then not in business by 2016.

This will form part of the biggest series of wine social media events ever held in this country, and will deliver powerful insights into building wine brands online, along with providing opportunities for wineries and wine enthusiasts to tell their own stories to a global audience. Rick Bakas has in excess of 50,000 twitter followers and over 4,500 facebook fans. Live twitter feeds and streaming to influencers in the USA and overseas means these events have global reach and the power to impact tens of thousands of consumers.

About Rick Bakas

Rick Bakas is one of the world's foremost social media experts. He is a trailblazer for communications in the digital age and heads Bakas Media in the USA. Rick was the first director of social media in the wine industry and is recognised as a leading authority on building wine brands and communities online. Rick shapes ideas and concepts that connect wineries to new consumers through tweet-up tours, global online wine tastings and digital communication strategies.

Rick Bakas' lecture on mastering social media will be presented in a formal lecture format for one hour. It will be followed by canapés and an interactive WCA Taste and Tweet (#WCATT) with the theme: Next Frontier of Australian Wines. To join in the Taste and Tweet with Rick following the lecture with thousands of consumers and key USA influencers tuning in, please bring along a bottle that you would call an Australian "Next Frontier" wine. It may be a new style, new vineyard, new variety or new region wine that you think is pushing the frontier for Australian Wine. If you have any information about where the wine can be bought, the RRP or just some more information on why you think it sits at the next frontier, please bring it along.
