VARIETAL BREAKDOWN

Cabernet Sauvignon

REGION

Margaret River

VINTAGE

From the summer rainfall & river flooding in the Swan Valley, to the threat of not ripening any of the red grapes in Margaret River, the 2017 vintage will be remembered as one of the most nerve-racking and anxious seasons. It certainly beats all of the last 10 vintages I’ve seen at Sandalford.

Overall, the whole growing season, from Spring through to Summer / Autumn was much cooler than average. There were no heat extremes this year. This delayed the ripening of all varieties by at least 3 -4 weeks than normal. For the whites, the wines have excellent flavour concentration and structure and were harvested with a good natural acid and sugar balance.

WINEMAKERS COMMENTS

This wine was made as a Rose from the very first day in the vineyard. The grapes were picked late March – April and after crushing, they were held in the press for 4-5 hours of skin contact. Once the desired colour and flavour was attained, the juice was drained from the press and cold-settled in tank. Fermentation progressed at cool temperatures ensuring fruit characters were fully preserved. The ferment was tasted daily and once the desired sugar level was reached, the fermentation was stopped followed by immediate stabilisation, clarification and bottling. Pristine fruit in a bottle is more than apt to this style.

TASTING NOTES

COLOUR – Pink, bright and bold PINK.
NOSE – This year there are more strawberries than cream, but it is still strawberries and cream.
PALATE – There are spice notes in here that really lift the summer pudding flavours – think lots of berries, not just strawberries but raspberries and blueberries as well with vanilla and cinnamon spices. This wine is off dry and balanced with natural acidity producing a refreshing and flavoursome finish. Definitely a wine to serve chilled, add in an ice block or two if needed, and drink whilst fresh and vibrant. But most importantly, enjoy!

AWARDS

JAMES HALLIDAY RED 5 STAR WINERY 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011
"Sandalford is one of Australia’s oldest and privately owned wineries. In 1970 it moved beyond its original Swan Valley base, purchasing a substantial property in Margaret River that is now the main source of its premium grapes. Wines are released under the Element, Winemakers, Margaret River and Estate Reserve ranges, with Prendiville Reserve at the top.  Exports to all major markets"
Australia’s leading wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted and extremely prestigious RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2018 Edition, page 590, released 3rd August 2017.

RATINGS / ACCOLADES / REVIEWS

"★★★   (3/5 stars).  Good example of a traditional grenache rose.  Sweet and luscious with good acid balance".
The Wine and Spirit Insider,  November/December 2017, page 117

"Spring is sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where the birdie is. It’s a favourite rendition of mine come springtime, but not as evocative as getting out a delicious bottle of rose and having it with a light lunch of whatever.  The ‘what-ever’ is exactly that because rose goes with pretty much whatever.  This rose is a perennial fave of mine.  Strawberries and raspberries lead the berry flavour charge with a dash of vanilla spice hovering in the background.  The acid is there but not overly so and all round it’s a pretty moreish drop.  Serve it well chilled with ‘whatever’ or nothing if that’s your want.  Just don’t put it in the cellar in the hope of something better down the track."
Medical Observer, Dr Peter Hay, October 2017, page 70.

"Cherry pink colour.  An old-school rose with considerable sweetness, bright ripe berries and balancing acidity.  I suspect this wine will have a loyal fan base."
www.TheRealReview.com, Toni Paterson, 19th September 2017

"Deep, bright red/pink colour with a touch of development.  The aroma is cassis cabernet-like and bright, crushed leaf and raspberry, while the palate is full flavoured and fairly sweet."
www.TheRealReview.com, Huon Hooke, 02nd September 2017

"Sandalford Wines have been adorning our tables since the 1840’s, and the combination of experience and innovation places today’s winery high on our list of reliable, premier local wines. During the last decade, both the whites and the reds have continued to improve several notches. We put this down to concerted energy going into the winery’s cooler climate Margaret River operations, where fruit quality is second to none on a global scale.  Sandalford is able to draw on a range of grape varieties from the Swan Valley and Margaret River.  But it’s the wines from down on the cape (Margaret River) that keep pulling in the accolades and the awards."
www.TheStarfish.com.au All the Best from Perth’s West, Peter Rigby.

"Sandalford Wines is a true institution in Western Australia. Established in Perth’s Swan Valley in 1840, there is a rich history to this pioneering company which was one of the first to recognise the potential in Margaret River, establishing a vineyard there in 1970."
Mining Chronicle, Karl Franzen, June 2011, Page 35

"Sandalford has well and truly leapt into the big league of premium producers in WA, having now completely transformed itself to a Margaret River wine operation.  The Estate Reserve and Margaret River Range are entirely from Margaret River. "
Ray Jordan’s 2011 WA Wine Guide, published October 2010, page 151

"RED 5 STAR WINERY – Sandalford is an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity."
Australia’s most pre-eminent wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition released 28th July 2010.

"Producer of the Year, and Winemaker of the Year:  Sandalford Wines"
