2017 Sandalford Estate Reserve Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

VARIETAL BREAKDOWN

88% Sauvignon Blanc and 12% Semillon

REGION

Margaret River

VINTAGE

From the summer rainfall & river flooding in the Swan Valley, to the threat of not ripening any of the red grapes in Margaret River, the 2017 vintage will be remembered as one of the most nerve-racking and anxious seasons. It certainly beats all of the last 10 vintages I’ve seen at Sandalford.

Overall, the whole growing season, from Spring through to Summer / Autumn was much cooler than average. There were no heat extremes this year. This delayed the ripening of all varieties by at least 3 -4 weeks than normal. For the whites, the wines have excellent flavour concentration and structure and were harvested with a good natural acid and sugar balance.

WINEMAKERS COMMENTS

This wine is deliberately made to be a very Sauvignon Blanc dominant style. The Semillon acts in support giving some weight and consistency to the style but it is the more lifted and aromatic qualities of the Sauvignon Blanc that we want to see in this wine. The majority of fruit in this wine was sourced from our Margaret River Estate Vineyard. We have also sourced a small parcel of fruit from exceptional vineyards, to complement our fruit and add complexity to the finished wine. All parcels were machine-harvested in the cool of night during March 2017. After 3hours of skin contact, the must was pressed, with only the free-run juice utilised for fermentation. Low solids and cool ferment temperatures ensured the fruit characters were preserved to their utmost in the resultant wine.

TASTING NOTES

COLOUR
Pale lemon with a lime hue.

NOSE
Intense passionfruit with a grassy lift and seductive sweet spices.

PALATE
The passionfruit and grassy notes combine with citrus and sweet guavas. There is a complexity to this wine and it will continue to evolve with time in the glass. The palate has a wonderful texture, with flavour intensity and a balanced acid line that gives the wine a lingering finish. Serve chilled, and enjoy whilst young and fresh.

JAMES HALLIDAY RED 5 STAR WINERY 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011

“Sandalford is one of Australia’s oldest and privately owned wineries. In 1970 it moved beyond its original Swan Valley base, purchasing a substantial property in Margaret River that is now the main source of its premium grapes. Wines are released under the Element, Winemakers, Margaret River and Estate Reserve ranges, with Prendiville Reserve at the top.  Exports to all major markets”
Australia’s leading wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted and extremely prestigious RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2018 Edition, page 590, released 3rd August 2017.

RATINGS / ACCOLADES / REVIEWS

“That sauvignon blanc makes up 88 per cent of this Margaret River bled will explain its overwhelming dominance of passionfruit flavours.  Semillon’s contribution adds a note of complexity to a captivating fruit-driven explosion of favours. Enjoy it right now.”
The Sunday Telegraph, John Fordham, 8th October 2017

“WINE OF THE WEEK.  A lightly framed but exquisitely balanced sauvignon blanc-dominant blend.  Crisp and zesty on the palate with a lift of citrus and topical fruit that carries through to a racy, long finish.  Fine, crisp acid helps on the finish.  Nice wine in the short term.  90/100”.
The West Australian, Ray Jordan, 28 September 2017, page 10 Today section

“Pale straw colour, with a fresh herb and faint peppermint aroma.  The palate is intense and shrill with tart acidity and moderate intensity of straightforward flavour.  The aftertaste is lemon sherbet and peppermint, but its quite restrained.  It could fill out more, if given a few months in the bottle.”
www.TheRealReview.com, Huon Hooke, 25th September 2017

“Sandalford Wines have been adorning our tables since the 1840’s, and the combination of experience and innovation places today’s winery high on our list of reliable, premier local wines. During the last decade, both the whites and the reds have continued to improve several notches. We put this down to concerted energy going into the winery’s cooler climate Margaret River operations, where fruit quality is second to none on a global scale.  Sandalford is able to draw on a range of grape varieties from the Swan Valley and Margaret River.  But it’s the wines from down on the cape (Margaret River) that keep pulling in the accolades and the awards.”
www.TheStarfish.com.au All the Best from Perth’s West, Peter Rigby.

“Sandalford Wines is a true institution in Western Australia. Established in Perth’s Swan Valley in 1840, there is a rich history to this pioneering company which was one of the first to recognise the potential in Margaret River, establishing a vineyard there in 1970.”
Mining Chronicle, Karl Franzen, June 2011, Page 35

“Sandalford has well and truly leapt into the big league of premium producers in WA, having now completely transformed itself to a Margaret River wine operation.  The Estate Reserve and Margaret River Range are entirely from Margaret River.”
Ray Jordan’s 2011 WA Wine Guide, published October 2010, page 151

“RED 5 STAR WINERY – Sandalford is an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.”
Australia’s most pre-eminent wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition released 28th July 2010.
