2016 Sandalford Margaret River Range Rose

VARIETAL BREAKDOWN

Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Shiraz

REGION

Margaret River

VINTAGE

The mild spring conditions merged into a warm and dry start to summer, with the vines on track slightly earlier than normal. These conditions were interrupted in mid-January 16, with 70mm of rain falling in the vineyard due to a tropical rain event. With this moisture came the challenge of increased fungal pressure on the fruit - 2 weeks out from the white harvest (leading to a very stressed Viticulturalist and Winemaker). For the reds, it gave them a much appreciated drink in the lead up to harvest in late March. Despite this challenge, all fruit harvested was of exceptional quality, showing intense varietal characters.

WINEMAKERS COMMENTS

This wine was made as a Rose from the very first day in the vineyard. The grapes were picked mid-March and after crushing, they were held in the press for 4-5 hours of skin contact. Once the desired colour and flavour was attained, the juice was drained from the press and cold-settled in tank. Fermentation progressed at cool temperatures ensuring fruit characters were fully preserved. The ferment was tasted daily and once the desired sugar level was reached, the fermentation was stopped followed by immediate stabilisation, clarification and bottling. Pristine fruit in a bottle is more than apt to this style.

TASTING NOTES

COLOUR
Pink. I could use Fuschia or Crimson, but to me it's just bright and bold PINK.

NOSE
I keep trying to change this descriptor, but I can't. This wine is unmistakeably strawberries and cream.

PALATE
Again, there are the unmistakable berry notes of strawberries and raspberries, with a hint of vanilla spice. This wine is off dry and balanced with natural acidity producing a refreshing and flavoursome finish. All in all a wine we believe is a benchmark Australian style. Definitely a wine to serve chilled, add in an ice block or two if needed, and drink whilst fresh and vibrant. But most importantly, enjoy!

AWARDS

"JAMES HALLIDAY RED 5 STAR WINERY 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, and 2011"
"Sandalford is one of Australia's oldest and privately owned wineries. In 1970 it moved beyond its original Swan Valley base, purchasing a substantial property in Margaret River that is now the main source of its premium grapes. Wines are released under the Element, Winemakers, Margaret River and Estate Reserve ranges, with Prendiville Reserve at the top. Exports to all major markets"
Australia's leading wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted and extremely prestigious RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2017 Edition, page 578, released 4th August 2016.

RATINGS / ACCOLADES / REVIEWS

"So as I was drinking this deliciously refreshing raspberry rose, I thought what a forgotten style this is and how well suited it is to the Australian climate. Ask most Aussies what sort of wine they will like and 99% fall into either the white or red wine camp. How many of us put our hand on our heart and utter rose as our preferred style? Probably as many of us who thought Clive Palmer was a great MP. Buy a bottle of this moreish rose and enjoy it with lunch - it goes with pretty much any food and will appeal to white or red drinkers alike. You can't go wrong - like sitting on the fence but making a statement at the same time!
Medical Observer, Dr Peter Hay, November 2016, Page 72

"Sandalford Wines have been adorning our tables since the 1840's, and the combination of experience and innovation places today's winery high on our list of reliable, premier local wines. During the last decade, both the whites and the reds have continued to improve several notches. We put this down to concerted energy going into the winery's cooler climate Margaret River operations, where fruit quality is second to none on a global scale. Sandalford is able to draw on a range of grape varieties from the Swan Valley and Margaret River. But it's the wines from down on the cape (Margaret River) that keep pulling in the accolades and the awards."

"Sandalford Wines is a true institution in Western Australia. Established in Perth's Swan Valley in 1840, there is a rich history to this pioneering company which was one of the first to recognise the potential in Margaret River, establishing a vineyard there in 1970."
Mining Chronicle, Karl Franzen, June 2011, Page 35

"Sandalford has well and truly leapt into the big league of premium producers in WA, having now completely transformed itself to a Margaret River wine operation. The Estate Reserve and Margaret River Range are entirely from Margaret River."
Ray Jordan's 2011 WA Wine Guide, published October 2010, page 151

"RED 5 STAR WINERY - Sandalford is an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity. "
Australia's most pre-eminent wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition released 28th July 2010.
