2015 Prendiville Reserve Chardonnay

100% Chardonnay

100% Margaret River

The 2015 vintage in Margaret River started with an unusually warm winter and plenty of rainfall, followed by mild and windy conditions in November, resulting in a prolonged flowering period. This changed in the second half of December to ideal ripening weather, dry and sunny without any extreme heat events and stayed consistent through to the end of February. The whites all harvested during this period are of exceptional quality, showing intense varietal characters.

The Sandalford Estate vineyard in Margaret River is the largest and oldest vineyard in this famed region having been originally planted in 1970. The vineyard is located in the northern sub-region of Margaret River known as Wilyabrup. This sub-region is some 4 degrees Celsius warmer on average than the southern parts of Margaret River. This ensures optimal ripeness and generosity in the wines produced. The Chardonnay vines utilised to make this wine are genetically the renowned Gingin clone planted on the Estate in 1985. This clone is inherently low-yielding with added reduction in cropping from both the age of the vines and the lack of irrigation.

The old Gingin clone Chardonnay vines, were hand-picked and then immediately transferred to a refrigerated container sitting in the vineyard next to the pickers. This allowed for instant cooling of the fruit. With the container set at 0 degrees Celsius, the fruit was immediately chilled down. On arrival at the winery, the fruit was hand-tipped into the winery tank press. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed with only the free-run juice being used for this ultra-premium style. After settling this juice overnight the cloudy supernatant was transferred to oak for full barrel fermentation in a temperature controlled cellar. At the end of fermentation the barrels were topped and sealed. After 8 months maturation the wine was removed from oak, stabilised in the traditional manner prior to clarification and bottling. Only 560 six-packs were bottled with each bottle individually numbered.

Oak Treatment:

8 months in 42% new Louis Latour French oak barriques and 58% one to three year old Louis Latour barriques. Expensive and exclusive, when only the best will do.

Tasting Notes

Yellow straw, with lime hues.

Initial restraint opens to a complex blend of grapefruit, peaches, vanilla, roasted cashews with underlying citrus notes.

Margaret River Chardonnay at it's best. This wine is overflowing with rich Chardonnay fruit, seamlessly balanced with the finest French oak. The palate is intense, yet shows restraint, and the crisp acidity gives this wine an exquisite structure leading to a long cleansing finish. It is early days for this wine, it will keep evolving in the bottle for the next 10 years - more if cellared in optimum conditions. Serve cellar cool, 12 to 16˚C.

SANDALFORD WINES: RED 5 STAR WINERY 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, and 2011
“Sandalford is one of Australia's oldest and privately owned wineries. In 1970 it moved beyond its original Swan Valley base, purchasing a substantial property in Margaret River that is now the main source of its premium grapes. Wines are released under the Element, Winemakers, Margaret River and Estate Reserve ranges, with Prendiville Reserve at the top. Exports to all major markets.
Australia's leading wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted and extremely prestigious RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2016 Edition, page 577, released 29th July 2015.

“96/100.  The complex bouquet balances toast and grilled cashew nuts with very intense pink grapefruit and stone fruit aromas, the palate providing an instant replay as the flavours ricochet around the mouth, and a very long finish.  Amid all this frenetic activity the wine actually remains calm and elegant.”

Halliday Wine Companion 2017 Edition, James Halliday, released 4th August 2016, page 578

“Balanced and restrained chardonnay.  Picked earlier yet there is no shortage of full, ripe fruit and power in this well-crafted chardy that demands your attention from the first sniff.  Beautiful savoury white peachy character on the nose.  The palate is delicate but intense and driving.  Lip-smacking crunchy finish. 95/100”

West Australian Newspaper, The West Weekend, Ray Jordan, June 25-26 2016, page 26

“Sandalford Wines have been adorning our tables since the 1840’s, and the combination of experience and innovation places today’s winery high on our list of reliable, premier local wines. During the last decade, both the whites and the reds have continued to improve several notches. We put this down to concerted energy going into the winery’s cooler climate Margaret River operations, where fruit quality is second to none on a global scale.  Sandalford is able to draw on a range of grape varieties from the Swan Valley and Margaret River.  But it’s the wines from down on the cape (Margaret River) that keep pulling in the accolades and the awards.” All the Best from Perth’s West, Peter Rigby.

“Sandalford Wines is a true institution in Western Australia. Established in Perth’s Swan Valley in 1840, there is a rich history to this pioneering company which was one of the first to recognise the potential in Margaret River, establishing a vineyard there in 1970.”

Mining Chronicle, Karl Franzen, June 2011, Page 35

“Sandalford has well and truly leapt into the big league of premium producers in WA, having now completely transformed itself to a Margaret River wine operation.  The Estate Reserve and Margaret River Range are entirely from Margaret River.  The team of owner Peter Prendiville and winemaker Hope Metcalf have taken the wines in an exciting new direction.”

Ray Jordan’s 2015 WA Wine Guide, published November 2014, page 122

“RED 5 STAR WINERY – Sandalford is an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.”

Australia’s most pre-eminent wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition released 28th July 2010.
