2014 Sandalford Margaret River Range Cabernet Merlot

VARIETAL BREAKDOWN

78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot

REGION

Margaret River

VINTAGE

Margaret River has once again been favoured with ideal ripening conditions for the 2014 vintage. Over 1000mL of winter rain meant there was a solid level of sub-soil moisture for the vines. Mild summer conditions prevailed with cool nights and an almost constant breeze producing grapes which held their natural acid balance and had exceptional flavour development at lower sugar levels. Again, all fruit was disease free, with all varieties coming off at perfect ripeness.

WINEMAKERS COMMENTS

The fruit for this wine was machine harvested during the cool of night in mid-March. After crushing the must was inoculated with selected strains of yeast and fermentation proceeded at an even pace for two weeks until dryness. The resultant wine was then drained and pressed. After MLF the wine was matured for 10 months in 20% new French oak, before blending and bottling.

TASTING NOTES

COLOUR - Dark cherry red

NOSE - Red berries and dusty plums, with notes of cedar and nutmeg.

PALATE- Sweet blackberries, red currants and plums up front, opening up to reveal a mix of stewed rhubarb and marzipan with nutmeg and vanilla spices. Silky smooth, yet firm tannins add great length to the finish. This is a rich blend that will continually evolve in the glass as you enjoy every sip. Medium term cellaring will only add to the complexity.

"Sandalford is one of Australia's oldest and privately owned wineries. In 1970 it moved beyond its original Swan Valley base, purchasing a substantial property in Margaret River that is now the main source of its premium grapes. Wines are released under the Element, Winemakers, Margaret River and Estate Reserve ranges, with Prendiville Reserve at the top. Exports to all major markets"

Australia's leading wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted and extremely prestigious RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2017 Edition, page 578, released 4th August 2016.

RATINGS / ACCOLADES / REVIEWS

"94/100. How one could afford to mature a wine in new French oak for this price is beyond me, but it doesn't stop there, for the quality of the fruit deserved this oak. There is an abundance of cassis, black olive and all-up savoury flavours on the medium to full-bodied palate, ripe tannins a further bonus."

"The Bordeaux kingpins, cabernet sauvignon and merlot, enjoy commanding status as stand-alone varieties. But they also make great bed partners, a vinous marriage from heaven for lovers of fine red wine. Put simply, merlot is the centrepiece of the cabernet sauvignon "doughnut", adding a special infusion of flavour to round out the wine. Cabernet Merlot has become the modern age red partnership, following in the footsteps of foundation cabernet shiraz blends, and the 2014 Sandalford Margaret River Range Cabernet Merlot ($20) is an excellent example as any. A dual gold medal winner, its rich, silky integrated flavours roll ever so invitingly over the palate, a measure of winemaker Hope Metcalf's skill in delivering optimum result."

The Sunday Telegraph, John Fordham, 17 July 2016

"Dark plum and berry fruits with hints of fresh herbs. Nicely balanced medium-bodied sweet fruit palate with slightly chalky tannins."

"Sandalford Wines have been adorning our tables since the 1840's, and the combination of experience and innovation places today's winery high on our list of reliable, premier local wines. During the last decade, both the whites and the reds have continued to improve several notches. We put this down to concerted energy going into the winery's cooler climate Margaret River operations, where fruit quality is second to none on a global scale. Sandalford is able to draw on a range of grape varieties from the Swan Valley and Margaret River. But it's the wines from down on the cape (Margaret River) that keep pulling in the accolades and the awards."

"Sandalford Wines is a true institution in Western Australia. Established in Perth's Swan Valley in 1840, there is a rich history to this pioneering company which was one of the first to recognise the potential in Margaret River, establishing a vineyard there in 1970."

Mining Chronicle, Karl Franzen, June 2011, Page 35

"Sandalford has well and truly leapt into the big league of premium producers in WA, having now completely transformed itself to a Margaret River wine operation. The Estate Reserve and Margaret River Range are entirely from Margaret River. "
