January 2006

The 2006 Symphony at Sandalford, Sandalford's premier music event, featured Australia's diva of soul, Marcia Hines, teamed with a full 56 piece symphony orchestral conducted by John Foreman, for one magical night under the stars.

The range and power of her deep, resonant voice ensured the 6000 strong crowd a fabulous evening as she started the night with her opening song "Ain't Nobody".

She made her entrance dressed very much like a 1960's Motown Queen and wore a megawatt smile that, if possible only got brighter as the evening went on and the applause got louder.

Hines set out to prove that her billing as Australia's diva of Soul was on the mark.

Her 1970's Queen of pop songs-"Your love still brings me to my knees' and 'Something's Missing' got a hearty response from the audience, but the real treat was the way she mixed in the hits with a few unexpected musical selections. Standouts on the evening were 'Fine Brown Frame' a cheeky 1940's jazz standard. "Fire and Rain" and a lovely strings and piano version of "I don't know how to love him".

As Courtney Murphy and his band started the evening as support, those who enjoyed Sandalford's VIP package enjoyed the ambiance of a chocolate, black and gold themed marquee decorated with masses of orchids, tropical flowers and berries, and dined on an entréé of marinated king prawns followed by a lavish main trio of lamb, grilled dhufish and poussin breast. Illuminated starbursts glittered above the dance floor when the VIP guests returned to the marquee. Hines made a quick personal appearance but much to the guests delight maestro John Foreman got up-close and personal and stayed to perform a couple of numbers on the piano with Libby Hammer and her band.
