The Pretenders and Paul Kelly FOR NEXT an evening on the green PERTH JANUARY 2007 There’s no doubt Chrissie Hynde has achieved that and much, much more. As the lead singer and songwriter of The Pretenders, Hynde has earnt her place in rock history as one of the genre’s most compelling lead singers in one of THE great rock bands. Roundhouse Entertainment and Mellen Events are thrilled to announce THE PRETENDERS and the wonderful PAUL KELLY will headline the next series of on the green concerts in January/February 2007 including Sandalford Wines, Swan Valley on Sunday January 28. It is set to be a cracker of a tour, with a sensational bill also featuring THE CHURCH. This will be the 9th on the green event at Sandalford Wines, the past two headlined by Pete Murray (2005) and Missy Higgins (2006) being totally sold out. The on the green series has continued its amazing growth in the past year, and with 21 concerts so far announced for the 06/07 summer season nationally, has confirmed its status as one of Australia’s best and most popular outdoor music events. And what a line-up for this next concert! 2006 has seen resurgence in interest in all things Pretenders. The band released their first-ever box set PIRATE RADIO via Rhino (Warners) in April this year. The four-disc package—81 tracks and 19 videos—contains more than five hours of The Pretenders’ best from all eight studio recordings plus soundtrack contributions, rarities and live tracks. Next up their first two great albums ‘The Pretenders’ and ‘Pretenders II’, which scored back-to-back Top 10 albums in the UK and US in 1980 and 1981, have been remastered with bonus discs to be released in Australia in early November (Warners). Both PIRATE RADIO and the remastered albums serve as a timely reminder of the band’s amazing catalogue of work. Tracks like ‘Brass In Pocket’, ‘Kid’, ‘Stop Your Sobbing’ ‘Talk Of The Town’, ‘Private Life’, ‘Tattooed Love Boys’, ‘Message Of Love’, ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘Chain Gang’ to name a few. It may be 25 years since they burst onto the UK scene with their brilliant first single ‘Stop Your Sobbing’, but the Pretenders never became…. just another rock band. Hynde’s sheer authenticity and superb rock sensibility has always allowed her to escape the usual clichéd roles of women in rock music; her brilliant songwriting always took the band to a higher level and live … well live… they can still show the young punks a thing or two. Next month they return to the US for a second tour this year, this time joining The Who for shows in November/December. Joining CHRISSIE HYNDE (lead vocals and guitar) is original member MARTIN CHAMBERS (drums), ADAM SEYMOUR (lead guitarist) who has played with the band since 1994 and NICK WILKINSON (bass guitar) who joined last year. PAUL KELLY is a long-time on the green favourite and with his band The Boon Companions will be a perfect musical match with Ms Hynde. As a storyteller he has few peers, and if he’s not an Aussie institution, he comes damn close! Songs like ‘From St Kilda To Kings Cross’, ‘Careless’, ‘Before Too Long’, ‘To Her Door’, ‘Dumb Things’ and ‘Last Train’ are but a few from what is an extraordinary body of work. PAUL’S last two albums have continued to impress both critics and fans. 2004’s ‘Ways and Means’ was a popular winner of the ARIA award for Best Adult Contemporary album, while 2005’s ‘Foggy an evening on the green is pleased to welcome THE CHURCH to their first concert. Since their first 1981 release ‘Of Skins and Hearts’ (featuring the magnificent ‘Unguarded Moment’), THE CHURCH have continued to push the boundaries of what a rock band should be. Recently returned from more international touring, they are sure to be hugely popular.
